The Turtle of Doom pictured here is an Imposter. The Actual Turtle of Doom was a bath toy we used bathing the kids when they were younger, sadly long since thrown away. RIP, Turtle of Doom, you are missed.
The World Turtle (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Turtle) is a pre-astronomical conjecture that the flat Earth (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flat_Earth) is supported by a giant turtle's back.
An infinite regress (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Infinite_regress) is an infinite series of entities where each entity depends on or is produced by its predecessor.
Point a webcam at a computer screen showing the output of the webcam and you get the cool visual effect pictured. It's finite regress limited by the capability of the display device.
Combining the ideas of infinite regress and the World Turtle produces the flat Earth supported by an infinite sequence of turtles (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turtles_all_the_way_down).
The brilliance of that connection resulted in an incorrect pre-scientific idea with continuing metaphysical and scientific relevance. Does everything have a cause? That's a metaphysical question. And even if the answer to the question is no, the turtle discovery process is scientific. How many turtles are discoverable, and is that question metaphysical or scientific?
What is the doom of which the turtles are harbingers of? Discovering more turtles means more scientific progress means more things are possible, even apocalyptic things. But humanity is still here, alive and kicking (reference date 5/19/2024). I think I have more faith in scientific progress than the turtles (and the average person), but the possibility remains unsettling.
